The news broke on Friday that after Wetherholt's impressive efforts in his first season with the St. Louis Cardinals, the two parties have agreed to a contract extension that will catapult Wetherholt into significant wealth. According to ESPN, Wetherholt and the Cardinals signed an eight-year, $112.5 million extension which buys out multiple years of free agency for the rookie standout.

Wetherholt made his major league debut this season as the lead-off hitter in the Cardinals line-up, and took no time at all to make an impact on the game. And from there, Wetherholt has only continued to prove he's worth his spot on an MLB roster.
In 87 appearances this season, the rookie slugger has recorded 91 hits, 36 RBI, and 13 home runs while scoring 57 runs. He's also drawn 38 walks, and added nine stolen bases. Overall at the plate, he has batted an average of .267 with a .411 slugging percentage.
Now, his new contract ensures that will we have ample time to continue his success at the top level of professional baseball, and earn significant money while doing so – some of which may even end up donated to the university in due time. And for those always excited to see Mountaineers excel in the pros, it's thrilling to see Wetherholt so quickly rise to the top-tier of the MLB.
