The past month for former West Virginia Mountaineer JJ Wetherholt has been one of the best months he could have asked for. But the former WVU baseball player isn't slowing down as he is continuing to turn heads and make his name even more well-known.

An all-time great in the WVU baseball program, JJ Wetherholt was the seventh overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft, and has had an amazing calendar year in 2025. In addition to his recent call-up to the St. Louis Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate Memphis Redbirds, Wetherholt was selected to participate in the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game.

Not only was he chosen for the National League team, but Wetherholt was penciled in the leadoff spot as the National League’s DH. Starting the party early, in the bottom of the first inning, Wetherholt took a 1-1 pitch and drove a ball off the left-field wall for a stand-up double, recording the first hit of the game for either team. Wetherholt’s double had an exit velocity registered at 105.9 mph off the bat.

Wetherholt finished the game going 1-4, with his double that came in the first inning his sole hit in the game. Starting the game at the DH position, Wetherholt was moved to second base to play the field and also recorded an assist.

Ranked as the Cardinals’ number one prospect and all of MLB’s 19th-ranked prospect according to MLB.com, there are some serious expectations for the former Mountaineer shortstop. Getting selected for the Futures Game and getting the start at the leadoff spot is just more proof of his skill as a player

The left-handed hitting infielder continues to showcase a red-hot bat at the plate and is a tough out for anybody he faces. In 234 at-bats across two levels (Double-A and Triple-A), the Mars, Pennsylvania, native is hitting a super impressive .303 at the plate with a .912 OPS. If he continues at this pace, Wetherholt is going to put a lot of pressure on the Cardinals' front office to decide whether or not he should be promoted to the major league club.

A great representation for the WVU baseball program, Wetherholt showcased the talent that comes from the WVU baseball program. With Wetherholt on the verge of breaking out and Victor Scott II the starting centerfielder for the Cardinals, the WVU baseball program’s reputation in the majors is increasing every day.
