With Spring Training just around the corner in the MLB, WVU baseball legend JJ Wetherholt has been named one of the best minor league prospects in all of the MLB.

At the end of January, MLB Pipeline released their list of Top 100 prospects, and Wetherholt was listed right near the top. St. Louis Cardinals’ infielder Wetherholt came in as the fifth-ranked prospect across MLB. The honor comes as little surprise for West Virginia Mountaineers fans, or for other baseball fans who were aware of the monster Double-A and Triple-A seasons that Wetherholt had in 2025.

Former WVU Baseball Standout JJ Wetherholt Set For Big Season In 2026

Across Double-A and Triple-A ball, the former Mountaineer slashed .306/.421/.510, ending with a .931 OPS. Wetherholt made an immediate impact upon his arrival to Triple-A and stayed hot through the end of the season.

With the trades of Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan, the path for Wetherholt to take over a starting position on the Cardinals’ infield is looking more promising. With third base and second base left unfilled for the organization, the door for a spot on the Opening Day roster is wide open for the former WVU baseball legend.

Should Wetherholt make the Opening Day roster for the Cardinals, he will be joined by fellow former Mountaineer and former collegiate teammate Victor Scott II. Scott II will be entering his third professional season as he continues to make his name known as one of the best defensive centerfielders in the MLB. Posting a 17 outs above average (OAA), Scott II ranked in the 97th percentile in all of Major League Baseball and ranked third among all centerfielders and second out of NL centerfielders.

Having two former Mountaineers in the same lineup for an MLB team would be a very cool feat for WVU baseball fans to see. And there is a good chance that dream might just come true for WVU baseball fans.
