Geno Smith has had a roller coaster of a career in the NFL, and that doesn't seem to be changing in 2026. The former West Virginia quarterback struggled through much of his career, before having his first real breakout season in 2022, being named NFL Comeback Player of the Year with the Seahawks and earning two Pro Bowl selections from 2022-2023.
But last season, he was shipped to the Las Vegas Raiders, and had a major regression that made many think the veteran was washed up after 13 years. But now, he's back with the team he started his career with, the New York Jets, and he's proving anyone who thought his career was winding down wrong with his hot start to the season.
Former WVU star Geno Smith excels during Week 3, leads the NFL in completion percentage
On Sunday, the Jets lost to the Detroit Lions in a tightly-fought game, but Smith was a massive reason the Mountaineers were even in the game. He went 31-for-37 passing for 321 yards and three touchdowns in the loss, posting a 129.8 passer QB rating. And that was just another strong effort among three consistent performances this season.

On the year, Smith is 77-for-102 passing for 783 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. And his 75% completion leads the league through the first three weeks. That doesn't exactly seem like the type of performance you'd get from a quarterback who is past their prime to us.
After a controversial offseason followed a disappointing season with the Raiders, it's refreshing to see Geno Smith find success this season with the Jets. And from what we can see so far, some people might need to retire their takes on why Geno Smith is over-the-hill – because heould be set for another incredible season.
