Just a few years ago, former WVU football star Geno Smith was making waves as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Now, he's back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Following online accusations over the weekend from an ex-girlfriend that Smith assaulted her, the police in Davie, Florida disclosed on Tuesday morning that the police are now investigating the allegations made against Smith. Officers were dispatched to Smith's home in Florida on Sunday after the ex-girlfriend called 911.

No one was arrested or taken into custody on Sunday when the police arrived, which came after the mother of Smith's six-year old child posted a video of a dispute with Smith on Instagram, with the video captioned that Smith "beat [her] a** cause he HATES taking care of his special needs kid and can't be left alone with him because he'd rather watch s** online and play Call of Duty."

The following day the local police indicated the investigation was closed. However, it appears that after the incident was further reviewed, an investigation has officially been opened. Neither Smith nor the Jets have commented on the matter.

"We were informed [Monday] evening that, during review, it was determined that this case is being further investigated by detectives," a spokesperson for the police department said. "It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time."

What does this mean for Geno Smith's career?

A couple things should be made clear before diving into the repercussions and effect of this on Smith's career. The first being that these are currently only allegations, and Smith has neither been charged with a crime nor found guilty of one. The second being that if Smith is found guilty of assault, his behavior must be condemned. Domestic violence should be at all times considered unacceptable.

As to how it effects him on the gridiron? Well, it will likely be a speed bump to his career, but not neccesarily fatal crash. If he does end up facing charges and pleading guilty, some sort of punishment would likely be expected. But the NFL has also proven on several occasions that it doesn't consider such crimes to be justified by expulsion from the league, and many franchises are willing to take the PR hit for the right player.

However, the biggest problem facing Smith is that at this point in his career, even a speed bump could do significant damage. Smith played well enough for the Seahawks in recent seasons, but he had a wildly disappointing year for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025. Now, he's back with the New York Jets, a franchise he started his career with that is in desperate need of a starting quarterback.

He's played in the league for 13 seasons, and while it's no uncommon these days to seem some quarterbacks extend their career to 20-plus seasons, just as many that have debuted alongside of after Smith have already hung up their cleats.

So if this does result in a significant suspension, or the Jets decided he's not worth the PR risk, this could be the final blow that ends the veteran's career as an NFL starter. However, if he's able to play the full season and pushes through the backlash, it's possible this becomes an offseason scandal forgotten in a few years, and potentially another story of NFL negligence in punishing domestic abusers. For now, we'll have to wait and see.
