The NBA Summer League is a chance for young, overlooked players to make their names known as contributing pieces for NBA teams. After an uneventful rookie season, former WVU basketball player Jesse Edwards took advantage of his 2025 summer league opportunity in July.
During the Minnesota Timberwolves' last NBA Summer League game on July 19, Edwards posted an 18-point night in the a 104-101 loss to the Houston Rockets. Edwards spent one season at WVU during the 2023-2024 season, the first WVU basketball season without legendary head coach Bob Huggins.

In the final game of the summer league season for the Timberwolves, Edwards added eight rebounds and four blocks during his 23 minutes of play on July 19. His 18 points on the night were good enough for second on the team that night, only behind point guard Tristen Newton, who scored 24 on July 19.
Edwards made his debut for the Timberwolves last season on March 2. Edwards only played in two games last season and only managed to get on the court for two minutes total in those two games. Hopefully, Edwards will get to see more run this upcoming season with a Timberwolves team that looks to make another deep playoff run.
During the five games that the Timberwolves played in the 2025 NBA Summer League, Edwards averaged 6.8 points per game with 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per contest. Hopefully, Edwards did enough in those five games to prove that he can be a valuable addition on the bench playing behind four-time All-NBA selection and four-time Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert.
Even though Edwards was at WVU for one lone season, he made a significant contribution to the team that season. Edwards averaged 15 points and eight rebounds per contest in 2023-2024. That season was the one season that Josh Eilert was the interim head coach, and WVU struggled to gather wins on the season, finishing with a 9-23 record.
When the 2025-2026 NBA season kicks off for the Timberwolves, WVU fans will hope to see Jesse Edwards on the opening day roster for Minnesota. Until then, Edwards just has to wait and see what the team’s decision is.
