Many MLB teams, including the St. Louis Cardinals, started their season last week. During the Cardinals' 5-3 win over the Minnesota Twins on Opening Day last Thursday, former WVU outfielder Victor Scott II made a great play in centerfield to help secure the Cardinals’ Opening Day win.
Twins had runners at second and first with one out in the top of the sixth; the Cardinals were hanging on to a 4-2 lead at the time. Just when the Twins thought they had a chance to get right back into the game, Scott II raced down a fly ball in the right-centerfield gap at the warning track. On the run, Scott II stretched out and made a great catch, regained his balance as he got the ball back into the infield quickly to help the Cardinals get a double play on a Twins runner who did not tag up on the play.

Scott II got the attention of national media for his spectacular effort on his web gem catch. JomBoy Media’s Talkin’ Baseball posted the clip of Scott II’s catch on X with the caption “Victor Scott II ran that one down!”.
On Monday, it was reported that Scott II was going to make the Opening Day roster and get the start in centerfield. The Powder Springs, Georgia, native shined defensively in his Opening Day start.

Unfortunately, Scott II couldn’t find much success at the plate during the 5-3 win over the Twins. Scott II finished 0-4 at the plate with one strikeout. But what is the old saying in baseball? It is a long season. The former Mountaineer will have plenty of chances to find ways to contribute at the plate during a 162-game season.
Scott II’s blazing speed and very reliable glove should keep him in the lineup for much of the season. The Cardinals are not predicted to do much damage in the NL Central this season. According to FanGraphs, the Cardinals are projected to finish under .500 and third in the NL Central with a record of 80-82 in 2025.
The former WVU star outfielder should continue to get starts in the outfield. During his time in Morgantown, Scott II was a career .254 hitter with 11 home runs and 75 RBIs in his three years wearing a WVU uniform.
Mountaineer and Cardinals fans are hoping to see Scott II figure things out offensively while maintaining his great defensive play and showcasing his elite speed.
