After signing a pretty impactful deal earlier this month, former WVU offensive lineman Colton McKivitz is now tied to the San Francisco 49ers for a few more seasons. And he has been proving he's worth the extended contract.
On September 8, McKivitz signed a three-year, $45 million extension with the 49ers after the first game of the season, allowing San Francisco to lock up their starting right tackle. The former WVU Mountaineer is in his sixth season in the NFL after being drafted in the 5th round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the 49ers, and has been a critical piece of the team's offensive line.
This season, that offensive line has paved the way for a 49ers offense that has led their team to a 3-1 start and a hold on first-place in the NFC West while averaging 368 yards per game – the fifth-best team in the NFL in that statistical category through Week 4 (with a pair of Monday night games remaining). Individually, McKivitz holds a 74.3 Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade after four games – which is 16th out of 105 qualifying offensive tackles in the NFL. McKivitz has also earned an 81.7 passing block grade from PFF. That is good for the ninth-best grade from all qualifying tackles.

Starting in 46 games and appearing in 66 games over his NFL career, McKivitz is an experienced offensive lineman who is a very capable blocker on the edge of the offensive line. Stronger as a pass blocker, McKivitz dropped his sacks allowed in 2023 from nine to two sacks allowed in 2024.
Getting a three-year extension with San Fransico. McKivitz is certainly part of the long-term plans for the 49ers. With probable future Hall of Famer Trent Williams being 37 years old, the 49ers are not sure what direction they need to take with their left tackle. But after the extensions with McKivitz, they do not have to worry about the right tackle spot for three more seasons.
While playing for the old-gold-and-blue from 2016-2019, McKivitz was a four-year starter, making 47 starts for the Mountaineers.
