The college baseball regular season is winding to an end, and the Mountaineers are once again in play for a Big 12 Championship and another trip to the NCAA Tournament – and perhaps even an outside opportunity to host an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2019. The Mountaineers are coming off a clean sweep of Kansas State this past weekend, and leapt to No. 15 in the D1Baseball Top 25 Poll, as well as earning Top 15 placements in multiple other polls.
But could this finally be the year, after two consecutive Super Regional appearances over the past two years, that the Mountaineers finally make a run at the College World Series in Omaha and potentially even a national championship? Well, the statistics currently suggest it's within the realm of possibility.
West Virginia baseball meets national championship criteria
11Point7 College Baseball has tracked each national champion since 2010 and crunched the data on exactly what it takes to make it to the pinnacle of the sport. This data shows their is a collection of trends exhibited by these teams, including no losing streaks of five or more games, no being swept more than twice a season, no more than 23 losses entering the postseason, and maintaining a winning road record – and those are just four of eleven data points.
The outlet posted a list of 42 teams that still fit the national championship criteria as we enter the first week of May, and the Mountaineers found themselves on the list. Of course, with two conference series and a midweek game left to play, the Mountaineers could still play their way off the list. But as things sit, things are still looking good for a potential title run.
