The West Virginia Mountaineers are hoping to avoid a road trip to another hostile environment in the NCAA Tournament this season, and with the initial strong start to their season, there were high hopes around the program that they may be able to bring an NCAA Tournament Regional to Kendrick Family Ballpark for the first time since the 2019 season.

But now, recent results on the diamond have shifted the perception of the Mountaineers, along with their tournament resume, and suddenly, it's seeming like whether or not WVU can secure a host seed will be up in the air. And the most recent projections predict that West Virginia may have some work left to do if they are hoping to bring an NCAA Regional back to Morgantown.

WVU project as No. 2 seed in NCAA Tournament

The NCAA Tournament in baseball is broken down into 16 regions of four teams, with the top 16 seeds in the country earning the distinction as the No. 1 seed, which comes along with the chance to host the opening weekend action.

Right now, D1Baseball, the site whose Top 25 poll is considered the only officially recognized such rankings by the NCAA, has the Mountaineers sitting as a No. 2 seed in the Gainesville Regional, hosted by No. 1 seed Florida. However, Florida is considered the the 14th overall 1-seed. With the way the bracket is organized, that means the Mountaineers are just the third team outside the top 16 host sites.

How close they still are to hosting may come to a surprise to WVU fans, after an ugly series loss and an absolutely brutal midweek loss dropped them to 1-3 over the past week. But there is still a real possibility the Mountaineers bring the postseason to Morgantown this year.
