The West Virginia Mountaineers made plenty of big moves in the transfer portal this season, but none were bigger than the acquisition of running back Cam Cook from the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.
Cook was the leading rusher at the FBS level last season, racking up 1,659 yards on the ground and averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He also tallied 16 touchdowns, which was tied for sixth-best in the country. He also has prior Big 12 experience, having spent the first two seasons of his career with the TCU Horned Frogs. And as the 2026 season continues to get closer to opening, Cook is garnering some significant nation attention.
West Virginia Mountaineers RB Cam Cook named Preseason All-American
On Tuesday, the Walter Camp Preseason All-American Teams were released, and Cook showed up to represent the Mountaineers as a Second-Team Preseason All-American.

The accolade goes to show that it's not just those around the West Virginia program that are excited to see what Cam Cook can do – analysts and experts around the country also have high expectations for WVU's top incoming transfer.
Cook earns the award after earning some other, less serious (but still prestigious in it's own fashion) national recognition recently – as he was rated one of the top 10 running backs in the upcoming EA Sports College Football 27 video game.
If Cook can manage to live up to all this hype, with a revamped offensive line in front of him that should be much improved from last year, the Mountaineers should be a much more competitive team on the offensive side of the ball this year.
