Bob Huggins has done his best to maintain a low profile since the drama surrounding his departure from the WVU men's basketball program in the summer of 2023. But a recent visit to West Virginia's biggest rival program is now going viral on social media and drawing him some attention.
Huggins, a Morgantown native who played at WVU in college before returning to lead the Mountaineers as head coach from 2007-2023, is a legend in Mountaineers' lore after leading the program to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, including four Sweet 16 appearances and the 2010 Final Four. But in a recent trailer teasing an episode of a behind-the-scenes documentary looking at Pitt's men basketball and preparations, Huggins made an appearance while visiting the Pitt facilities.
unscripted episode 2 drops tomorrow‼️🎬

Go behind the scenes with Pitt Men’s Basketball as we gear up for the 2025–26 season — from early-morning workouts and preseason training to our exhibition win over Providence. Hear from Coach Capel, our newcomers, strength coach Vince… pic.twitter.com/XCvRO5bbxD
It seems his main purpose for being their involved giving an interview regarding Jay Kuntz, who was hired as the GM for Pitt this past offseason after spending his entire career in college basketball with the Mountaineer. Kuntz started on with the program as a student manager in 2008, spent three years as a graduate assistant upon earning his degree, and eventually held roles including Assistant to the Head Coach, Player Development Coordinator, and Director of Player Personnel/Recruiting under Huggins. He served in the latter role for interim Josh Eilert after Huggins left the program, and was a roster development consultant for the program last season.
“If every coach could have a guy like Jay, it’d be a heck of a lot easier on coaches," Huggins said in a clip from the interview featured in the trailer.
Huggins was also seen hanging out in head coach Jeff Capel's office on the footage, though whether he offered any coaching or guidance to the team as a whole is unknown until the full episode featured in the trailer drops. It's not necessarily uncommon for a retired coach like Huggins to make such a drop-in as a favor to an old friend and former assistant, but there is a segment of the WVU fanbase who will want to be upset at Huggins for the appearance. Whether that's fair or not is up to you to decide, though some WVU media members and former player Emmitt Matthews Jr. weighed in on the subject below.

On Bob Huggins visiting Pitt, he’s not coaching anywhere and he has relationship with now Pitt GM @JayTKuntz. Jeff Capel also has a lot of respect for Huggins. The hatred fans have rarely extends to coaches and players in this era. That’s just the truth of the situation.

Huggs just supporting Jay Kuntz, and would’ve done that no matter the school he was at. He’s just supporting his guy imo

Kuntz and the Panthers will visit Morgantown for this year's edition of the men's basketball Backyard Brawl, which will take place on Thursday, November 13th. The Panthers got the edge over WVU last season for the second consecutive year in an 86-62 win in Pittsburgh, but the Mountaineers are 6-2 in the last eight meetings between the programs. That game is set for a 6 PM EST tip-off, and will be a 'Gold Rush' themed affair.
