The West Virginia Mountaineers are looking to make their third straight NCAA Super Regional appearance, and hopefully advance all the way to Omaha for the College World Series. To get their, they first have to get through a stout slate of opponents in the Morgantown Regional this weekend. And as the action kicks off today, the Mountaineers are in good shape to achieve their goals,
According to the Vegas oddsmakers, the Mountaineers enter the weekend as the favorites to win the regional in Morgantown. Entering the weekend, the Mountaineers are set at -105 odds to capture the regional title. No. 2 seed Wake Forest is listed at +195 odds, Kentucky at +400 odds, and Binghamton at +3000 odds. WVU is also the favorite in the opening game against Binghamton.
Wake Forest is just one seed below the Mountaineers in the overall seed line, so it makes sense that they would be the next favorite to win after West Virginia. They're also likely the team that could give the Mountaineers, entering as the sixth-ranked team in the ACC in ERA (4.65), but they have also struggled against top-level pitchers – which might me why Steve Sabins is set to put Chansen Cole on the mound against Binghamton on Friday and save star pitcher Maxx Yehl for Saturday.
The regional play starts on Friday with No. 1 playing No. 4 and No. 2 playing No. 3. The winners will advance to the winner's bracket, while the losers will play each other in an elimination game on Saturday.
The team that survives the elimination game then faces the loser of the winner's bracket matchup a second elimination game. Whoever makes it through the loser's bracket will have to face the champion of the winner's bracket on Sunday – the winner's bracket champion can advance to Super Regionals with one win, while the loser's bracket champion must win on Sunday to force a final championship game on Monday.
