The transfer portal has now been closed for new entries for nearly two weeks, and the West Virginia Mountaineers have made no new transfer additions in over one week. With portal activity winding down significantly as we approach the end of January, WVU football has added 34 new transfers.
But there are still gaps on the roster in the minds of many who follow the team, and there were a few portal prospects that West Virginia pursued heavily but were unable to land. Let's take a look at three players WVU wishes they had secured commitments from.
Koen Entringer - S - Iowa
Entringer visited Morgantown and was a top target for the Mountaineers before committing to Louisville. He spent last season as a starting safety for the Iowa Hawkeyes. starting all 13 games for the program in 2025, racking up 73 tackles, four pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Safety is perhaps the biggest current need for WVU, with no returning players at the position. The Mountaineers are set to add five high school recruits, one JUCO recruit, and four players from the portal at the position.
But only one player will have significant in-game experience at the Power 4 level, and Zac Alley tends to run a defense that utilizes three safety positions. Entringer would have added much-needed Power 4 experience in the room.
Sammy Omosigho - LB - Oklahoma
Omosigho visited West Virginia and Mike Casazza reported on the Country Roads Confidential podcast that he was "made a really good offer" by the Mountaineers before eventually committing to Purdue.
Omosigho played in 37 career games for Oklahoma and was a significant piece of the team's defensive rotation during the past two seasons, tallying 661 snaps over the course of his career and recording 97 tackles, four pass deflections, and two sacks during his time with the program.
He also played in Zac Alley's defense in 2024 as Alley served as the co-defensive coordinator with the Sooners. While the linebacker position looks stronger than safety at first glance, Omosigho's veteran presence and experience playing underneath Alley would have also provided a significant boon to the WVU defense.
Liam Danitz - EDGE - Hope College (Mich.)
Danitz is a unique prospect, and normally you wouldn't see a ton of Division 3 transfers on a list like this for the Mountaineers. But this one is built a bit differently.
Danitz fits the prototype of the style of freak athlete Rich Rodriguez loves to recruit – Danitz is a 6-foot-5, 230-pound edge rusher with stunning speed and a knack for finding the ball behind the line. He is a two-sport All-American at the D3 level, running 10.55 in the 100-meter dash and 20.92 in the 200-meter dash. He also tallied 46 tackles, including 21 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks this past season on the gridiron.
Danitz ended up landing with Wisconsin despite a WVU visit, and it's a move that might haunt WVU as they also have no returning players at their bandit, EDGE, or defensive end positions, and just six incoming players (four transfers, one JUCO, and one true freshman) either listed on the roster or with prior experience at any of those positions.
