Know your foe: Baylor Bear Offense

Jersey number 12 belongs to Charlie Brewer, a 6 foot 1 inch, 206 pound junior quarterback, that commands his offense. He has played quarterback at Baylor, since arriving as a true freshman, in 2017. Suffering through growing pains during his freshman year lone win season, the 2019 campaign has thus far, not been a painful experience, for Charlie Brewer. In just seven games, the standout junior has completed 130 of 196 passing attempts, with only 3 interceptions, for 1,866 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is averaging 266.6 yards per game, through the air. Mr. Brewer’s aerial exploits aren’t the only way that he hurts his opponents. He keeps drives alive and wears down opposing defenses, by turning broken plays into positive yardage. So far, Brewer has rushed for 6 touchdowns and he averages just shy of 21 yards per game.

Speaking of rushing, number 6, JaMycal Hasty and number 7, John Lovett garner the bulk of the ground game carries. Hasty, a 5’9” 205 pound senior averages 51.7 yards per game and 6.5 yards per carry. He has four touchdowns for his efforts. Likewise, Lovett who stands at 6 feet even and 212 pounds, also has four touchdowns, with averages of 63.7 yards per game and 6.9 yards per carry.

Which one of these two running backs is the bigger threat as a receiver? That would be JaMycal Hasty, who averages 20.4 receiving yards per game. Who are the traditional receiving threats for Baylor? Number 5, Denzel Mims is a favorite target of Charlie Brewer. Mims averages just north of 74 yards per game, with 5 touchdowns. Number 81, Tyquan Thornton is nipping at his heels with a 72.4 yards per game average and 3 touchdowns. Number 13, R.J. Sneed is also worth a mention. He pulls down 42.3 yards per game and has 2 touchdowns, to round out the top receivers.

Now, when you watch the game Thursday night, you’ll have an idea of whom to keep an eye on, for the Baylor offense. Offense can put you in position to win, but a stingy defense can seal a victory. What’s the scoop on Baylor’s defense?
