The WVU women’s basketball team was off to a hot start this season but the Texas Longhorns proved to be just a bit hotter.

The women’s basketball team won 11 games in a row to begin the season but knew that this match up with Texas was going to be the most difficult test so far. The Longhorns prevailed in convincing fashion, 79-58.

The Mountaineers started off decently only trailing by five points at the end of the first quarter. But a nine-point second quarter set the tone for the rest of the game as the Longhorns had their way with the Mountaineers up and down the court.

The WVU basketball team was led by Naomi Davenport for the second-straight game as she led the Mountaineers with 20 points. Teana Muldrow was limited to 13 points and Chania Ray scored 15 points. Ray is the main ball handler for the Mountaineers so to see her climb up the scoring column is a good sign, when she is usually relegated to helping other players score.

But, overall, the WVU basketball team struggled. It couldn’t dominate the opposition like it had all season but that was to be expected with a high-class team like Texas. The Longhorns had one loss coming into this contest and that was an 82-75 setback to Tennessee, another top of the line women’s basketball program.

The Longhorns also lost in an exhibition game to a team from Rome, Italy. It was the first organized game the Longhorns played this season and it’s safe to say a lot was learned from that early defeat overseas.

The WVU basketball team has also taken trips abroad in recent years to help with team building and experience. It’s a common practice for men’s and women’s teams to do this and Mike Carey will probably take the WVU basketball team on another trip in the coming years.

The Mountaineers have a short time to regroup after suffering this first loss. They will be coming home later this week to host Kansas State at the WVU Coliseum. To help their regrouping effort, the WVU basketball team will get another game at home, against Iowa State on Jan. 7.
