1984, 31-14 WVU win

The Mountaineers won the first-ever meeting between the two teams back in 1984. They took part in the Bluebonnet Bowl, which was then called the Houston Bowl, which is now called the Texas Bowl.

The Big 12 does retain the tie-in to the current Texas Bowl, though neither TCU nor West Virginia has played in this incarnation of the game.

Back in 1984, neither the Horned Frogs nor the Mountaineers were ranked heading into the contest. In a fairly even match up, the WVU football team pulled away thanks to the quarterback play of Kevin White.

The WVU football QB threw three touchdown passes and had 280 passing yards. His favorite target was Willie Drewery who caught six passes for 152 yards, including a long pass of 62 yards.

West Virginia finished that season with a record of 8-4. The bowl win snapped a three-game losing streak the Mountaineers suffered at the end of the regular season.
