Opening Weekend
The Mountaineers will be lucky enough to host the opening weekend as the No. 4 seed, but they'll have some tough opponents in their path.
They open with Miami (OH), who won 24 of their last 27 games to finish the season at 28-6 and claim both the regular season MAC Championship and the MAC Tournament Championship.
They're led by a duo who have helped lead the program for multiple years – junior forward Amber Tretter, who paces the team in scoring (14.5 points per game) and rebounds (8.2 per game), and sophomore guard Tamar Singer, who is fourth in scoring (10.9 points per game) and leads the team in assists (7.1 per game) and steals (2.6 per game).
The RedHawks are first in the MAC and 42nd nationally in defense, allowing just 58.5 points per game – the Mountaineers, meanwhile, allow 58.1 points per games and are 37th in the nation on that side of the ball.
If they win, West Virginia will advance to face either No. 5 Kentucky or No. 12 James Madison, which will be played just before the clash between Miami (OH) and WVU. The Wildcats finished their season at 23-10 and finished ninth in the SEC during the regular season, earning one win in the SEC Tournament before bowing out in the quarterfinals.
The Dukes ended the regular season fourth in the Sun Belt, but won 15 of their final 16 and knocked off the top two seeds on the way to winning the Sun Belt Tournament and punching their ticket. Whoever advances to the Round of 32, that game will take place on Monday, March 23.
Sweet 16 and Elite Eight
Everyone loves an underdog, but your safest bet in March is often the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 seeds. That's who West Virginia will have to worry about most if they make it to the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. The No. 1 seed, Texas, would be the first up in the Sweet 16, which is taking place in their home state.
Texas finished the season 31-3 and just defeated national powerhouse South Carolina to win the SEC Tournament. The Mountaineers last played the Longhorns in nonconference play during the 202-2025 season, with the Longhorns winning 78-73. Texas would advance to the Final Four that season with WVU would make it to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament before bowing out.
The No. 2 seed, Michigan, finished third in the Big Ten and 25-6 overall, and lost in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals to Iowa. No. 3 seed Louisville finished 27-7 and were the runner-up in the ACC both the regular season and the conference tournament – they lost the ACC Championship game to Duke, who the Mountaineers defeated in the regular season.
