WVU women's basketball will beef up non-conference schedule at holiday tournament

The Mountaineers will face a pair of Power 5 opponents, including one of the nation's top teams, during the week of Thanksgiving.

The West Virginia women's basketball program has experienceda period of unprecedented successunderneath the leadership of Mark Kellogg in recent years. And as the programcontinues to seek consistent success on the national stage, they are taking steps to elevate their non-conference schedule as well.

On Monday, news dropped that the Mountaineers will do so in a major way during the week of Thanksgiving this season, as they will make the trek to a holiday tournament to face-off with a pair of big-time opponents.

West Virginia Mountaineers to face Florida, Notre Dame at Battle 4 Atlantis

West Virginia women's basketball willtravel to the Battle 4 Atlantis event in The Bahamasduring Thanksgiving week, where they will clash with two Power 5 opponents: with games against Florida on November 24 and Notre Dame on November 26.

The Gators provide an SEC opponent that is in rebuild mode, but could be a sleeper team underneath the guidance of veteran head coach Tammi Reiss, who led Rhode Island to a 28-5 record and the NCAA Tournament last season. They will feature an All-American transfer in the center of their lineup in former Penn State star Kiyomi McMiller.

Notre Dame is one of the top teams in women's basketball at the moment. They enter the season riding a streak of five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Elite Eight this past season.

They are led by Hannah Hidalgo, who was named the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in 2026 and also became the first player in ACC history to be named both the Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in consecutive seasons.

These two opponents will be resume-boosters for the Mountaineers if they manage to pull off wins – with Notre Dame having the potential to be a particular big fish. And such games on the non-conference schedule help ensure the Mountaineers will be battle tested once it's time for the grind of Big 12 play and the postseason.
