The West Virginia women's basketball team has just two regular-season conference championships in its program. Only one of those has come in the Big 12, way back in 2014 – over a decade ago. Now, the 19th-ranked Mountaineers find themselves in a position to add a third league title to their history books.
On Sunday evening, the Mountaineers will travel to face the No. 17 TCU Horned Frogs, who knocked off WVU on a buzzer-beater shot earlier this season. And the outcome of the game could determine if WVU women's basketball is bringing home the conference crown this season.
How WVU women's basketball can control their own Big 12 destiny
The Mountaineers will enter Sunday's showdown with the Horned Frogs with a record of 11-3 in conference play. Both Baylor and TCU currently sit at 10-3, after Colorado knocked off TCU last weekend, and TCU turned around and defeated Baylor earlier this week.
West Virginia has a win over Baylor already this season, which gives them a tiebreaker advantage if the teams finish with the same record. TCU currently owns a head-to-head win over WVU from the aforementioned meeting, but if West Virginia could win tonight, they would move into an outright lead for first place. From there, the Mountaineers would just need to win out to earn the league title.
That makes Sunday's showdown in Fort Worth one of the biggest Big 12 games this season, and many eyes will surely be on the Mountaineers. Tip-off between the two teams is scheduled for 8 P.M. EST on Sunday night, and the game will be broadcast on FS1.
