WVU football reassures fans about offense with dominant performance against UT-Martin

The West Virginia Mountaineers are 2-0 for the first time since 2018 after a strong 52-7 win over UT-Martin on Saturday. Andin the process of getting there, the Mountaineers likely reassured a ton of West Virginia fans who had concerns about their offense.

West Virginia looked dominant in their season opener on offense for the first half of action, but stalled out and scored just seven points in the final 30 minutes of play. That left some West Virginia fans wary of exactly what to think of the team’s offense, despite Rich Rodriguez admitting earlier this week that he chose to keep his playcalling conservative.

The Mountaineers decided to wipe away any impressions from the minds of fans that the offense might not be up to par as they took the field for a tune-up game against an FCS opponent. And put an asterisk next to the result due to the opponent if you’d like, but thing looked much better for the Mountaineers.

Michael Hawkins Jr.was the star of the game, going 5-for-7 passing for 155 yards and two touchdowns while also adding six carries for 96 yards and two touchdowns in just two-and-a-half quarters of action. The Mountaineers finished with 525 offensive yards in the win, including 316 rushing yards.

Don’t look now, but the Mountaineers might have a legitimate offense this season that can move the ball. And they’re likely going to need it, as their defense put up some questionable performances in the first two games of the season. But they will have their first real test on offense next weekend as they face Top 25 opponent Virginia in a neutral-site showdown.
