The most important thing in a football locker room can be a good leader, which is why the recent news surrounding WVU football redshirt junior quarterback Nicco Marchiol is promising.

Marchiol was recently named to the 2025 watch list for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, annually awarded to an FBS player for exceptional community service work and leadership skills both on the gridiron as well as in the community. Marchiol was one of over 100 players named to the initial watch list.

Marchiol enters the season for the Mountaineers competing for the starting quarterback job after spending the past two years as a backup behind former WVU starter Garrett Greene, who has since ventured off to the NFL in a wide receiver role. Marchiol is 3-0 as a starter at WVU himself, playing well for the Mountaineers when called upon to relieve an injured Greene.

Overall, Marchiol has appeared in 20 games over the past three seasons with the old-gold-and-blue, throwing for a total for 742 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2024, Marchiol started during the team's wins against Arizona and Cincinnati and made eight total appearances, tossing the ball for
434 yards with five touchdowns.

Marchiol does not have the starting gig locked up, however, as he has stiff competition for the role. WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez opened fall camp telling the press he has five quarterbacks in the mix to earn the start at signal caller when the Mountaineers open their season on August 30 against Robert Morris.
