The West Virginia Mountaineers are down, but they are not out for the count. It has been a tough start for WVU football this season as they've combatted injury issues and a struggling offense, and their record reflects that as they sit 3-6 overall and 1-5 in Big 12 play entering Week 11. But all hope has not been lost for the Mountaineers.
WVU upset then-No. 22 Houston last weekend, and looked like a wildly different team than fans had seen earlier in the season. The win preserved WVU's chances for bowl eligibility for another week, and gave the Mountaineers their first win over an AP-ranked opponent on the road in seven years, and their first win against any sort of ranked opponent on the road in six years.
Now, WVU has a second consecutive winnable game against a 3-6 Colorado squad that has lost by 35-or-more points in each of it's last two games before closing it's schedule against an injury-weakened Arizona State and a home game where they can attempt to upset a College Football Playoff contender in Texas Tech. And after the win against Houston, senior linebacker Chase Wilson indicated that those upcoming opponents shouldn't take WVU lightly after a slow start to the season.
“The season has had a lot of up and downs, but I think that this game was kind of a testament to who we are as team," Wilson told the Mountaineer Sports Network following the game. “I think we can be a very scary opponent for people to go against. I think the sky is the limit for this team.”
That's the type of fighting spirit that Mountaineer fans will love to hear, and that was on display from several players in last Saturday's massive upset. Now, WVU will get a chance to display it in front of 60,000+ fans at Milan Puskar Stadium this weekend as they look to embark on a winng streak for the first time this season.
