With the hiring of new WVU football head coach Rich Rodriguez and the departure of former starting quarterback Garrett Greene after exhausting his collegiate eligibility, exactly who will be under center for the Mountaineers this upcoming season is still a mystery.
Rodriguez has previously quipped that a starter won't be determined until the day of the first game on August 30, and returning junior Nicco Marchiol, transfers Jaylen Henderson and Max Brown, and incoming freshman Scotty Fox all saw equal opportunities during the team's 2025 Gold-Blue Spring Showcase.
During an appearance at Big 12 Media Days on Wednesday, Rodriguez was asked about his thoughts on how his quarterback room measured up against the rest of the Big 12 -- after taking a moment to highlight his thoughts on how much talent the league as a whole has at the position, he expressed his pleasure for what he seems to view as an abundance of talent at the position on his roster.
"I like our quarterback room. There are a lot of positions where I have some unknowns, and there's a little bit of unknown in our quarterback room, but there are four or five guys that we feel have the talent to have success in our quarterback room," he said.
In what should come as a surprise to no one, Rodriguez fell short of naming a starter or even mentioning where anyone specific stands in the quarterback competition after spring football and summer workouts. However, he did mention that he fully expects there to be a heated competition in fall camp.
"It's going to be an interesting competition. We have a couple guys who have played some football, and I'm really excited about them. And we got a couple young guys who have really great futures," he said.
He also mentioned that he feels like getting the right starter at the position will be a determining factor in his team's success this fall.
"It all starts at that position...if you don;t have a goo quarterback you have no chance to win," he added.
