WVU football dropped their third consecutive game on Friday night as they stumbled to a 38-24 loss to the No. 23 BYU Cougars in Provo, Utah. It's a game that seemed to show some improvement for the Mountaineers in certain facets of the game, but was still not sufficient enough for what WVU needs to do to be able to win games moving forward.
Mountaineer fans seem unsure of how to feel after the game against the Cougars. On one hand, it seems like a good chunk of the fan base seems to be writing off any hopes for further success for this team in 2025, and many are disgusted – or at least disappointed – with the effort being put forth by the Mountaineers. Some fans weren't even willing to stay up for a late-night game given what they saw through he first five games, and felt vindicated when they woke up to the result. And many aren't okay with the amount of time it appears this rebuild is now going to take.
But on the other hand, small improvement seem to be sparking hope for others. There are thoughts that maybe those positives can be built upon in the bye week and a banged-up team can get a bit helathier ahead of a schedule with a number of winnable games on the back-half of the schedule. Others at least see weapons than can be developed for the future and are excited by the young and talented players on the roster.
Some people are in both of these camps at once, and athletic director Wren Baker is asking the fan base to stick with the team as they build someting "special." Made the right choice to go to sleep as the game started last night.

This team needs a bye week more than anyone ever.

Goddamn, it’s 1:53am on the east coast, and the WVU BYU broadcast mentioned 13-9.

I’m tired of seeing people say how bad he was in 2001 and to give it 2 or 3 more years and we’ll be good.
— Madison (@madisonkelleyp) October 4, 2025
Ya’ll are okay with us being bottom of the big 12 for three more years? Because I’m not.
That goal line stop shows exactly why we are where we are. No push whatsoever.

Death, taxes, and WVU 3 & outs.

Is it just me, or are we just physically weaker on both sides of the line. Constantly getting put in the ground every game

If you told me pregame that we’d have a chance in the fourth quarter, I would’ve told you that you were insane. I’m very happy with how the boys played, bye week and let’s go on a run to a bowl game.

Hey mountaineers won the second half.

even with the picks (and that one wasn't on him) I think I've seen enough that we need to be done with the musical chairs at QB and just let Wilkins play and grow through mistakes for the rest of the year

there's a winning rich rod QB in there
Nothing about how WVU played last night was soft. The guys played with heart and played hard.
— Josh Wolfe (@Jwolfe4250) October 4, 2025
What was obvious was the complete difference of talent. WVUs defense was slower, weaker, and smaller than BYUs offense. That does not mean they are soft. https://t.co/4WiTdbIFzg
Stay with us! We will keep working and improving on the field and with our game day activities! The payoff will be awesome as we build something special together. Let’s Go! https://t.co/Iv7YhOdXww

Alley’s defense really does produce turnovers.

I think RR will learn from this season about the size and speed required to be effective at the P4 level. Right now we just aren’t big enough where we need to be. I think he is relearning how to coach at this level.
