WVU football camp footage gives glance at why WR room should be much improved

We're getting close to WVU football being one full week into the start of fall camp. And while there isn't a ton we've gotten to see yet that really tells us what the team will look like this season, we have gotten a a few glances that leave room for optimism. One of those came on Monday evening.

We're not sure who the starting quarterback will be yet, with Michael Hawkins Jr. and Scotty Fox Jr. battling it out for the role. But whoever starts at signal caller will likely have some better targets to work with than the revolving door of West Virginia starters did last season. And that isn't just the 'vibes'' talking – there's proof on camera.

Jaden Bray, Taron Francis make huge plays during West Virginia Mountaineers fall camp

The Mountaineers posted a clip of practice footage to social media on Monday night, which featured some impressive plays made two wide receivers who will likely play a big role in this season's offensive success.

Thevideo showsone clip with No. 11 on offense – which the official roster identifies as sophomore Taron Francis, a transfer from LSU – snagging a contested downfield pass out of the grasp of a defensive back for a huge gain. The second clip in the video has No. 5, who West Virginia fans will recognize as Jaden Bray, hauling in a touchdown pass in the corner of the endzone over a defender.

Fanswill not be surprised to see Braymake these types of plays – he's been highly touted since arriving on campus in 2024, and has been impressive in limited action. But he also spent most of his two seasons in Morgantown sidelined due to injury, and if he can stay healthy this season, he could finally prove himself as a top receiver in the Big 12 and give the Mountaineers a dangerous downfield target.

Francis might be a bit more of a surprise to see popping up in this clip. Hewas an intriguing additionthis offseason, as a former 4-star prospect who redshirted last year at LSU. And while he was in the rotation of what was presumed to be the two-deep during spring ball, he has not widely been projected as a starter entering this season – with Bray and either Prince Strachan or John Neider projected as the outside receiver starters, and DJ Epps as the primary slot receiver.

But if Francis is making these types of plays, he could find himself in the mix for a starting job – and will vertainly be a critical piece of the rotation regardless. And either of those scenarios are good news for the Mountaineers, as it means there will be plenty of depth at the position entering the season.

Last year, you could place plenty of blame on the quarterback play and offensive line for the disappointing passing game, but you could also tell that the receiver corps wasn't neccessarily elite either – outside of the potential displayed by Cam Vaughn, who transferred to Miami this offseason. And while there's still a lot of football to play out, that doesn't appear to be the case this fall for the Mountaineers.
