The West Virginia Mountaineers were reported to be shopping for new naming rights deals this summer, and it appears that the home of WVU basketball – known for years as the WVU Coliseum – will soon be rebranded.
Mike Casazza of EerSports broke the news on Thursday afternoon that the naming rights to the WVU Coliseum will be sold to Hope Gas, a company formerly known as Dominion Energy that is based in Richmond, Virginia and likely familiar to many WVU fans. The venue will be renamed Hope Coliseum and the money is expected to be donated to Blue-Gold Enterprises, according to the article – which is likely a colloquial term for Gold and Blue Enterprises, an in-house initiative launched by the University this summer to fund NIL and revenue sharing.
An announcement is yet to be made by the school, but is coming soon according to the report.
According to EerSports, the baselines beneath both hoops have already been repainted with the new name, and they provided a photo to back the claim. Senior Deputy Athletic Director Rob Alsop quoted the tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter, with an emoji indicating that the news is indeed true.

The news comes after WVU's board of governors recently voted to support a resolution to create a plan to elevate WVU's athletic funding to a level that competes with those in the top tier of spending in the the Big 12 Conference, and new naming deals like this are surely apart of that ongoing effort. The new name may take some adjusting to for fans, but it will hopefully continue to raise the type of money WVU needs to compete in the ever-changing world of college athletics.
EDITOR'S NOTE: As this article was being written, the news was officially confirmed by the University. The details of how much the naming rights were sold for was not disclosed, but athletic director Wren Baker provided an official statement on the move.
"Hope Gas is a West Virginia based company with West Virginia values and aspirations to make West Virginia an even better place to live and work," Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Bakersaid. "This partnership is an important step in our department's growth and stability as new revenue generation is vital to our future. Morgan O'Brien is a visionary leader, and we are proud to partner with him and the entire team at Hope to build on a great athletics tradition and form a winning partnership."
