West Virginia's men's basketball season is underway, and with multiple sports ongoing at the same time in November, it can be hard to keep up with all the news about the Mountaineers. Here are a couple intertesting pieces of basketball news you might have missed.
Jasper Floyd Joins Rarified Air in WVU History
If you paid attention in the slightest to WVU basketball's season opening win, you probably noticed that point guard Jasper Floyd exploded for 25 points, five steals, and four assists in the win.
What you may not have realized at the time is that something about that combination of a stat line sets him among a small but elite subset of Mountaineer basketball stars in the program's history. Floyd became just the fifth West Vigina player to ever record 25 points and five steals in a single game – the only other players to achive the feat are Alex Ruoff, Jevon Carter, Jaysean Paige, and Jordan McCabe. Carter is the only player to do it more than once, as he accomplished the feat three separate times in his collegiate career.
Joseph Yesufu Returns Home
Well, home might be an exaggeration. Joseph Yesufu did play for several different collegiate teams over his career. But his most recent home was in Morgantown, as he suited up for the West Virginia Mountaineers just last season.
He earned the nickname "Sunday" Joe for his numerous offensive explosions during games contested on Sunday, and played a crucial role in the team's rotation during a season that saw the program bounce back to an 18-13 finish after a histoically bad season. Yesufu averaged 6.0 points and 1.4 rebounds per game for the Mountaineers as a senior, and was subsequently hired as an assistant coach by Campbell this past offseason. Now, he gets to make one more trip to the Coliseum as he coaches against his former team.
