WVU men's basketball is back on top in the Backyard Brawl, and Mountaineer Nation is pretty excited about it.
After the Mountaineers knocked off the Panthers two months ago on the gridiron, fans were hoping West Virginia could pull off the clean sweep in both sports and earn a win over Pitt on the hardwood as well – and a new-look roster led by first-year head coach Ross Hodge did not disappoint in their first Brawl.
The Mountaineers had their most dominant performance of the season so far, running away to an assertive 71-49 victory that saw the Panthers fail to come within ten points of the lead at any point in the second half of play. The Mountaineers saw 7-footer Harlan Obioha find his groove underneath and dominate with a 19-point, six-rebound performance that gave the Mountaineers a glimpse at the best post play they've seen in Morgantown in years.
Now, the Mountaineers have won seven of the last nine editions of the Brawl on the hardwood, and Ross Hodge and his team have gotten an early taste of what it's like to beat the program's biggest rival, as well as what it's like to perform in front of a packed and rowdy Hope Coliseum, as over 12,000 fans turned out and made some noise to welcome Pitt into town.
Hodge was ecstatic after the win to get the victory for the people of West Virginia and fans of the program everywhere, and that sentiment, and those a part of Mountaineer Nation were pretty ecstatic on social media after the victory themselves. Those fans in attendance serenaded Hodge and the team with a rendition of Country Roads after the win, and you can check that out below – along with some of our favorite reactions so far to the victory,
Always love Country Roads after a win. But the Backyard Brawl just hits different. Let’s Go!!! https://t.co/jFnWwIRyBT pic.twitter.com/WQ9OHha0gd

Way to Brawl Mountaineers. Hodge ball looked good tonight. Use that as a season spark. #letsgo pic.twitter.com/pdVkZ8096C
God it feels good to own Pitt in everything. WVU’s first-year head coaches beat Pitt’s coaches with a combined 19 years there.
