WVU basketball suffered a disappointing end to what was otherwise a surprisingly successful season. Coming off the worst season in program history in terms of total wins, the Mountaineers managed to finish with a 19-13 record and record multiple Top 10 wins despite bringing in an entirely new roster underneath then-WVU coach Darian DeVries – but then the Mountaineers were snubbed from the NCAA Tournament and DeVries left for the Indiana job less than a week later.
One of the players on that team faced with dealing with such an unfortunate end to the season was Toby Okani, who joined the Mountaineers for his final season of collegiate eligibility and averaged 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
So when Okani ended up playing with WVU alumni team Best Virginia in the 2025 edition of The Basketball Tournament (TBT), it presented an opportunity to create a bit of a better ending to the past year for both himself and the WVU fans he grew to love during his time in Morgantown.
In that regard, it's hard to see Okani and Best Virginia's run this summer in TBT action as anything but a success. Best Virginia fell to Eberlein Drive in TBT action on Thursday, but managed to advance to the semifinal round of the event in their deepest run ever in the tournament. Okani was a reserve for Best Virginia but was a critical piece of the rotation, averaging 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds while playing 24.8 minutes per game during the team's run. He also closed the tournament with a pair of double-digit scoring performances against Shell Shock (10 points) and Eberlein (14 points).
