WVU baseball plays their way back into contention to host NCAA Tournament action

The Mountaineers could be in position to secure one of the coveted Top 16 seeds in the postseason.

The West Virginia Mountaineers hit a bit of wall in April with a tough stretch of losing baseball, but now, the program appears to be right back where they want to be as the season comes to a close.

WVU pulled off a massive clean sweep in a series against a Kansas team which entered the weekend ranked seventh in the nation, and did so on the road. With that trip of victories, the Mountaineers placed themselves right back into the hunt for the Big 12 Championship and are just one win away securing afirst-round bye in the Big 12 Tournament with three games left to play.

But in the bigger picture, the series sweep also has major implications for the NCAA Tournament, and despite playing their way out of a potential Top 16 seed and regional host site in the postseason in April, they have found their way back into the conversation by mounting a seven-game win streak to begin May.

D1Baseball analyst predicts West Virginia as NCAA Regional host after Kansas sweep

Following the action this past weekend, Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball (the outlet responsible for the official Top 25 poll as recognized by the NCAA) shared a clip on X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighting why he thinks the latest series sweep bodes well for WVU's chances at hosting in the tournament.

"West Virginia was on of the team's in the Nerdcast last Monday that we discussed as a potential host," Rogers said. "If I'm being honest, they were probably third or fourth on the list outside of the Top 16."

"And suddenly, they're just a game out of first-place in the Big 12 at 19-8, they're up to 18 in the RPI, they have 13 wins that are Quad 1 and Quad 2 combined. They're trending up. West Virginia was a club out of the hosting mix. This week, I imagine...I imagine West Virginia will be a host."

If the Mountaineers are able to land a Top 16 seed and bring NCAA Tournament action to Morgantown, it will be massive for the program. Home-field advantage is always a boon for a program, and Kendrick Family Ballpark provides one of the best environments in college baseball. It would also mark their first time hosting since 2019, so there will undoubtedly be a big turnout.

The Mountaineers are looking to make it back to their third consecutive Super Regional, and are among the teams with serious hopes of a College World Series appearance in Omaha next season. The last two years, WVU has had to go on the road for both Regional and Super Regional action. Having the opportunity to host the Regional round makes advancing that much easier, and increases the chance the Mountaineers may be able to move on to host a Super Regional.
