WVU baseball had a historically successful season under first-year skipper Steve Sabins that saw the team set a program record for total wins, finishing 44-16 overall, and advance to their second consecutive NCAA Super Regional before bowing out of postseason play to eventual College World Series Champion LSU. Sabins also helped the Mountaineers capture their first-ever outright regular season championship in the Big 12.

Now, Sabins' impressive effort in his debut season as the program manager has been recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), who have named Sabins the 20205 East Region Coach of the Year.

It's the second straight season that a Mountaineer head coach has taken home the award, as former head coach Randy Mazey was also awarded the accolade following his final year leading the Mountaineers in 2024. Mazey earned the honor by leading the Mountaineers to their first-ever Super Regional appearance.

It is the sixth time in program history that a WVU head coach has been named the East Region Coach of the Year, with Mazey capturing the award three times (2017, 2019, 2024) and former coaches Greg Van Zant (1996) and Dale Ramsburg (1994) also earning the award once apiece.

Sabins is continuing his solid work at the helm of the WVU baseball program, as he has working over the past month to put together a transfer portal class that some outlets have ranked among the top ten in college baseball. It will be exciting to watch the future of the program under Sabins' leadership.
