If West Virginia football is going to bounce back from a disappointing four-win season this past year, then the Mountaineers are going to need some things to go differently.

There was no shortage of issues last year for WVU football – which is often the case during when a team finishes a season with twice as many losses as wins. But there are certain areas of the team that need to be shored up from last year. And that means that certain players are going to need to make a significant impact this fall. Let's take a look at some of the main names that need to be at the top of their game this fall.

Offense

Scotty Fox Jr. OR Michael Hawkins Jr., QB

We've talked about this before. The Mountaineers started four different quarterbacks last year, and after Fox took over the job for good, he still struggled from the traditonal mistakes true freshmen make. Whether it's Fox taking the next step as a sophomore or Hawkins flat out beating him for the job, Rich Rodriguez will want the eventual starter to win the job early with an impressive performance.

Cam Cook, RB

Rich Rodriguez operates a run-heavy offense. Last year, the Mountaineers struggled with depth and injuries in running back room, and this season, there's not much experience at all behind Cook. He will be expected to take on a heavy load, and as the leading FBS rusher in 2025, he'll also be expected to put up big numbers.

Nick Krahe, OL

The West Virginia Mountaineers struggled significantly on the offensive line last year, which Rich Rodriguez repeatedly said was based in a lack of in-game experience. That has changed this year, and one of the reason's why is the team returning two starters in Nick Krahe and Landen Livingston. Krahe seems to be the leader of this group entering the season, and he will need to take his play to the next level this year.
