For the third consecutive season, West Virginia women's basketball is off to The Big Dance.

While the men's basketball team was unexpectedly left out of the NCAA Tournament as a bubble squad, the WVU women had a season well deserved of an NCAA Tournament bid. They were rewarded with a relatively strong seeding -- though it could be argued they were under-seeded -- and a short trip for their first weekend of action in the tournament.

The Mountaineers were given a No. 6-seed in the 'Birmingham 2' region, and will have a fairly easy trip to make to compete -- the Mountaineers will play their opening games in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as they were placed in a subsection of the bracket hosted by No. 3-seed UNC.

The Mountaineers know their destination and their seed, but they are uncertain of who exactly they'll face in the Round of 64 still. That's because WVU will take the court opposite a program that has to play their way into the tournament in the First Four -- WVU's opponent will be settled on Thursday night as No. 11-seed Columbia faces No. 11-seed Washington to determine who faces the Mountaineers. If Columbia wins, it'll mark the second consecutive year WVU has opened the tournament against an Ivy League opponent.

The WVU clash with the Columbia/Washington winner is set for Saturday afternoon. If WVU gets past the first round of action, they'll be set for action on Monday against the winner of No. 3 North Carolina and No. 14 Oregon State.
