The Mountaineers are under new(ish) leadership as head coach Rich Rodriguez looks to restart his tenure at West Virginia. However, the uniform department is looking to the past as the first game of the season creeps into focus.

On Monday, WVU released a sneak peek at a throwback uniform that the Mountaineers will don during the upcoming season, and fans quickly ate them up.

And yes, the Mountaineers decided to drop these uniforms the same day as the biggest fashion event of the year: the 2025 Met Gala.

The uniforms are a nod to an era of West Virginia football when the Mountaineers were dominant, winning SoCon conference titles in both 1964 and 1965 under legendary head coach Gene Corum. Not to mention, when the Mountaineers wore these uniforms in the mid-60s, it was right after Rodriguez was born just a few miles away from Morgantown.

Already this offseason, West Virginia announced some fairly hefty renovations to the practice facilities, including a "facelift" to the practice fields.

The last time Rodriguez was the head coach of West Virginia, he led the Mountaineers to a 10-2 finish for the regular season, as well as a win over the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl.

During his seven-year tenure as the WVU head coach, Rodriguez earned a 60-26 overall record, losing no more than five games in any given season.

WVU is set to kick off its 2025 season against the Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday, Aug. 30. The Mountaineers will face their rivals, the Pitt Panthers, on Saturday, Sept. 13, before kicking off their Big 12 schedule against the Kansas Jayhawks the following week.
