West Virginia Mountaineers Basketball News: Quinerly to the WNBA And New Transfer Commits

The college basketball world is busy as the offseason sets in, and news about your favorite program is coming out every day. Here are some important stories you may have missed surrounding West Virginia Mountaineers basketball.

JJ Quinerly Off To WNBA

JJ Quinerly made history on Monday night as the just the 11th player in West Virginia women's basketball history to hear her name called during the WNBA Draft.

Quinerly was selected by the Dallas Wings in the third round with the 27th overall pick. The Norfolk, Va.-native spent four seasons in Morgantown -- she was named an All-American as a senior and was a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award finalist, and also finished her career as the only Mountaineer in history to record 2,000+ points and 300+ rebounds, steals and assists.

Quinerly is the first WNBA Draft selection for WVU since Kysre Gondrezick was selected fourth overall in the 2021 edition of the event. She will join a Dallas roster that now include Paige Bueckers, who the Wings selected first overall last night.

Men's Basketball Adds Pair of Transfer Portal Commits

New West Virginia Head Coach Ross Hodge continues to piece together the puzzle that will be his 2025-2026 roster.

After already adding a high school commit in DeAndre Thomas and transfer portal commits from Brenen Lorient, Harlan Obioha, and Honor Huff, two more members of the roster have been announced.

News came over the weekend that the Mountaineers have added forward Jackson Fields from Troy. Fields helped the Trojans to a Sun belt Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance this past season while starting 33 games and averaging 7.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Fields' addition was officially announced by WVU on Tuesday, and he will have one season remaining.

Jasper Floyd is the most recent commit, with news breaking Tuesday that he'll be joining the roster. Floyd is a point guard who will follow Hodge from North Texas, bringing experience in the new system.

Floyd started all 36 games for North Texas this season and averaged 9 points, 3.9 assists, 3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. He will have one season of eligibility remaining.

Women's Basketball Reloads Roster in Transfer Portal

West Virginia women's basketball saw a good portion of last season's role players and depth pieces hit the transfer portal, and also lose key players like Quinerly and Kylee Blacksten to graduation. But Head Coach Mark Kellogg is wasting no time reloading his roster.

In addition to previously announced transfer Loghan Johnson joining the program, the Mountaineers have since added Riley Makalusky, Carter McCray, and Kierra Wheeler through the portal.

Makalusky joins the program after two seasons at Butler -- she started 23 games this past season and averaged 8.1 points and 2.8 rebounds while playing 24.5 minutes per game. Throughout her career, she has started 37 games and shot 38% from behind-the-arc -- she will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

McCray also will have two seasons of eligibility remaining -- she spent one season at Northern Kentucky before playing at Wisconsin this past year. She was Horizon League Freshman of the Year during her debut season, and then started 29 games for Wisconsin as a sophomore, averaging 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Wheeler was a late flip from SEC program Auburn, where she initially committed before backtracking on the decision late last week to instead join Kellogg's program in Morgantown. She comes from Norfolk State, where she was the 2024 MEAC Player of the Year and three-time All-MEAC Selection, helping her team to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. She averaged 15.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season.
