News gets rougher each passing day for West Virginia men's basketball.
The Mountaineers have already been eaten alive in the transfer portal with the departure of Darian DeVries to Indiana -- starters Jonathan Powell and Tucker DeVries will already be exiting the program, as well as freshman role player KJ Tenner.
Now, the Mountaineers will see another underclassman and starter from this past season's squad depart the program. On3 Sports broke the news on Tuesday that WVU starting forward Amani Hansberry will be entering the portal. Hansberry averaged 9.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game during his sole season in Morgantown after starting his career at Illinois. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Hansberry thanked Mountaineer fans on social media for their "unwavering support" and declared he would "explore new opportunities."

Hansberry entering the portal leaves just Sencire Harris, Ofri Naveh, and Haris Elezovic as potential returners for WVU that have seen action in the old-gold-and-blue. With that fact on the table, it looks increasingly likely that the roster next season will have to be rebuilt mostly from scratch, similar to what Darian DeVries did last offseason. Combined with the entire 2025 recruting class decommitting, WVU will have their work cut out for them with their next coach.
Hansberry in particular leaving suggests Associate Head Coach Chester Frazier may be out of the running officially following recent reports of him interviewing for the job -- Hansberry followed Frazier from Illinois to WVU and would likely want to stick around if he had belief he would be the next head coach. This also may not bode well for hopes of retaining Harris, who also followed Frazier to Morgantown from the Illini.
