The West Virginia Mountaineerswon their first game of the season on Saturdayagainst Coastal Carolina, but it certainly did not come without controversy among the WVU fanbase.

WVU escaped MIlan Puskar Stadium with a win, but it was only a seven-point win – the Mountaineers took home a 31-24 victory over the Chanticleers, and while the game was never as close as the score implied, there are legitimate concerns to be had about the defensive performance and the mid-game offensive lag.

It seemed at times that West Virginia might be holding something back, not wanting to put too much on the field. But some fans viewed it as the same offensive struggles from last season returning. Defensively, the Mountaineers allowed Coastal Carolina’s offense to have more success than a Group of 6 school should against a Big 12 opponent.

WVU football fans concerned after Coastal Carolina competitive in season-opener

Some West Virginia fans slammed the panic button on social media following the game, lamenting the win as something that made them feel worse about the team’s outlook this season. But there were some fans trying to soothe fears, pointing out there were likely first game jitters, as well as a concerted effort by Rodriguez not to put too much on film.

Overall, it’s probably best not to overreact too much to the Week 1 effort, and there is another tune-up game against an FCS opponent to get right before the Mountaineers get into their power conference opponents. Let us know how you’re feeling about the win, and check out some of the varying social media reactions below.

Too soon to say I’m done with this season?

I've never had a win feel like a bad loss before.

Only#WVUcould win but make you feel worse about them than you did going into the season .

Rich Rodriguez coached an incredibly poor 2nd Half with no intent on blowing out Coastal. It’s inexcusable.

The 1st half Mountaineers looked very good. Rich will get his stuff worked out, and I’m ready to beat UVA.

(All the crybabies from today won’t be allowed to celebrate)

Stop crashing out, folks. Rich doesn’t wanna show a damn thing before the UVA game
