On a night when West Virginia thought they were a lock for the NCAA Tournament, the Mountaineers were instead left wondering how in the world he didn't get in. After being in every single bracket from Bracketologist, the Mountaineers were somehow on the outside looking in when a team like UNC or Xavier, who had worse resumes than the Mountaineers, made it in.
West Virginia was the first team out in the NCAA tournament after having a solid season in a tough Big 12 conference, ending with six Quad 1 wins, including wins over NCAA Tournament teams like Kansas, Arizona, Iowa State, and Gonzaga.
Not only were West Virginia fans stunned, but college basketball fans everywhere wondered how the Mountaineers didn't make it in. They took to Twitter with their anger and confusion.
According to the committee, North Carolina was officially the last team in the field.

On the latest bracket matrix, featuring 111 bracketologists:
West Virginia was in all 111 brackets.
Indiana was in 90.
Texas was in 50.
Xavier was in 30.
North Carolina was in 27.
For…
The fact that West Virginia was in every single bracketologist's bracket and they didn't make the bracket is absolutely mad. The Mountaineers, at no point, thought they wouldn't make it in, and they certainly had the resume to get in.
#WVU is listed as the very first team left out of the NCAA Tournament team. #WVU had SIX Quad One victories this season.

The last three teams in - UNC, Xavier and San Diego State - had five Quad One wins..... COMBINED.
The fact that West Virginia had more Quad 1 wins than all those teams combined and didn't make it is crazy. The Mountaineers played in a much tougher conference than two of those teams and had more quality wins, so the fact that West Virginia didn't make it is the biggest snub there is.
WVU got screwed

Of course https://t.co/WtBb86u48q
West Virginia legend Pat McAfee kept his res short and sweet and hit the nail on the head. He didn't seem surprised by it, though, feeling like this is something that normally happens to the Mountaineers.
UNC getting in over West Virginia, which had neutral site wins over Gonzaga and Arizona, along with a win at Kansas, is, well, um, kind of a bad call.

Arizona was in the Big 12 Championship and is a high seed in the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga is another tournament team, and Kansas is also in the tournament, but winning in Lawrence is not easy, and West Virginia beat them all. UNC did not deserve to be in over West Virginia.
North Carolina making it is a shocker

West Virginia getting left out is a bigger shocker
Say it louder for the people in the back!
West Virginia got screwed

There is no lie being told here, hit the nail right on the head.
West Virginia got absolutely screwed. Never seen anything like it https://t.co/fawAtq4SXI

There might not be a bigger snub than West Virginia not making it into the NCAA Tournament.
West Virginia beat Iowa state and Kansas at the Phog without their best player but UNC gets a bid

Two NCAA Tournament teams, but apparently, West Virginia isn't good enough to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The reasoning behind UNC making it in makes no sense, they had one Quad 1 win the entire season, while West Virginia had six.
The absolute disrespect to the Big 12 is CRAZY. Oklahoma got a NINE seed while West Virginia was left out.

How is Brett Yomark letting this happen amongst college football, now basketball. Everyone had WVU in the field! What a stunner. UNC 1-12 in quad one games is the number…
A little confused as to how this is Brett Yormark's fault, but the gist of this tweet is true: West Virginia should have been in.
I’m still baffled by what the Committee did tonight. West Virginia had 6 Q1 wins, Indiana has 4. Boise said had 3. Xavier and UNC had 1 each. Why play the games?
— College Hoops Fanatic (@thebracketball) March 16, 2025
The regular season doesn't matter at this point. Yes, West Virginia lost to 16-seed Colorado in the Big 12 Tournament, but they still had a solid regular season. Why even play the regular season if the committee is going to pay the most attention to the conference tournament? At this point, only worry about the conference tournament because the committee is.
