West Virginia baseball is in about as good a place as they can be entering the month of May.

With the turn of the month, the Mountaineers will enter the final stretch of regular season action before the Big 12 Championships and NCAA Tournament get underway. The Mountaineers find themselves sitting 37-5 overall -- tied with Texas for the best overall record in college baseball -- and 16-3 in conference play, and are in position to earn the top seed at the conference championship and an opportunity to host an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2019.

The Mountaineers have been just as dangerous away from home than they are at Kendrick Family Ballpark this season -- WVU baseball is 22-2 in away games this season, which is the most road victories among all Division 1 programs.

That type of efficiency has led to the Mountaineers sitting in charge of their destiny in conference play entering the final weeks of the regular season. WVU’s 16-3 conference record has the Mountaineers sitting three games ahead of second-place Kansas and four games ahead of TCU and Arizona State with just three conference series -- nine total conference games -- left on the schedule for WVU.

If the Mountaineers can manage to win just six of the nine, and win one of the three in their regular season finale series against Kansas, they should secure themselves their second-ever regular season Big 12 Championship. Given that the Mountaineers have made it through conference play with just three losses so far, it’s not unlikely to think they could do so the rest of the way.

With each win, the Mountaineers get closer to securing their spot as a regional host in the NCAA Tournament -- the home-field advantage to open the postseason would also be a major advantage in helping the Mountaineers in their hopes to make their first-ever College World Series appearance.
