West Virginia men's basketball fans are rightfully excited about their latest commitment in the transfer portal.
The Mountaineers have added Treysen Eaglestaff to the roster being built for new head coach Ross Hodge's first season in Morgantown. Eaglestaff has a huge upside -- he's a college basketball veteran with one season of eligibility left, he brings a lanky 6'6 frame to the perimeter, and he averaged 18.9 points per game for North Dakota last season.
Eaglestaff was highly sought after in the transfer portal market -- powerhouse programs such as Kentucky, Gonzaga, BYU, and others wanted him, but many moved on after he initally committed to South Carolina at the end of March.
But Eaglestaff de-committed a couple of weeks later and re-opened his recruitment, and it seemed from his initial announcement that he wouldn't be going to South Carolina that the Mountaineers were the favorite to land him. This proved true when he eventually chose to land with the Mountaineers over the weekend.
While his experience, physical attributes, and consistent scoring average made him so appealing to so many teams -- including WVU -- one thing that also attracted attention to him was that he was the only Division 1 player last season to achieve more than one 40+ point scoring performance.
Eaglestaff managed two such games -- one in December on his homecourt against Top 10 opponent and eventual Elite Eight program Alabama, and another in March on a neutral court at the Summit League Tournament against South Dakota State.
Against Alabama, Eaglestaff unloaded for what would normally be a player's best outing of the season -- he dropped 40 points and went 8-for-18 shooting from three-point range as the Hawks nearly upset the Crimson Tide. You can see the full highlights from this win below.
But this ended up not being his top performance of the year, as he turned around in March and recorded 51 points, four rebounds, and four assists against South Dakota State in the conference tournament. He went 15-for-28 shooting from the field, 8-for-18 shooting from behind-the-arc, and made 13-of-17 free throw attempts in the win. Those highlights can also be found below this paragraph.
