Steve Sabins is making some significant additions to the WVU baseball pitching staff this offseason, and he may have just landed one of the most important pieces of the puzzle.

On Tuesday, Sabins landed a commitment from Louisville pitcher Colton Hartman. A Top 250 portal prospect, Hartman has spent his last few seasons with the Cardinals in the ACC. And in landing Hartman, the program adds a particularly intriguing factor to the pitching staff in Morgantown.

Colton Hartman adds Power 4 starting experience for the West Virginia Mountaineers

Hartman doesn't just bring prior collegiate experience to the Mountaineers – he provides significant starting experience in the ACC over three seasons. Hartman started 23 games on the mound and made 43 appearances over the last three years for Louisville.

He has amassed 113 strikeouts for the Cardinals , and has pitched in 91 innings. Some of that hasn't always been efficient or pretty – his career ERA currently sits at 6.97 – but he does offer crucial experience at a high level of the sport, and has posted a 7-5 win-loss record while doing so. And while a lot of the gambles taken on small-school pitchers has paid off for Sabins, that type of experience is priceless.

Hartman adds a dynamic that could prove beneficial for the Mountaineers if they get into any sticky jams, or their pitching staff needs rest and they need a reliable arm to call upon. That's a role that hasn't always been filled in recent years, and will be much welcomed by Sabins. And given a strong offseason in WVU's exceptional facilities, he may be able to develop his game enough to inherit the open spot in the team's starting lineup.
