WVU football got their Big 12 slate off to a sour start with a blowout loss against the Kansas Jayhawks at Booth Memorial Stadium on Saturday, and head coach Rich Rodriguez did not walk away from the loss as a happy camper.
During the post-game press conference on Saturday, Rodriguez shared his thoughts about the game against the Jayhawks, and you have to give him credit for at least being honest about his opinion. You could probably give him credit for relatability too, because his short and sweet answer on the team's performance probably mimics how most fans of the program feel.
"Not good. Definitely not good. Nothing was good. Coaching not good. Playing not good. I was okay with practice, but evidently, not good enough," Rodriguez said.
And that's pretty accurate – it's hard to find much good in the performance WVU put forth against Kansas. It seems that we are all further away from a solution to who the go-to quarterback needs to be than we were at the start of the year, the only running back that has shown the ability to dominate after Jahiem White's season-ending injury is now also struggling with his health to the point he didn't play a snap in Week 4, and the offensive line looked as bad as it has all season – and it's looked downright awful before.
Defensively, there are still flashes of what created such buzz around young defensive coordinator Zac Alley, but the Mountaineers struggled once again with a mobile quarterback for the second time this year and gave up 34 offensive points and well over 200 rushing yards in an affair where it seemed nothing could slow down the Mountaineers. What comes next is uncertain, but we can all agree – including Rodriguez – that what was on display Saturday won't cut the mustard for the Mountaineers.
