Rich Rodriguez met with the media on Tuesday morning ahead of the start of spring football for the West Virginia Mountaineers this Saturday.
During his press conference, Rodriguez addressed a number of different topics as his second offseason with the Mountaineers is well underway, and one of those topics was just what fans could expect for a spring football game this year.
West Virginia Mountaineers to host Spring Festival to capp spring football activities
Rodriguez referred to what the program has planned as a "Spring Festival" at multiple points on Tuesday, indicating that the Mountaineer are expected to forego a traditional spring game for the second consecutive year.
A date as also given for the event, with the festivities scheduled for Saturday, April 18. Rodriguez did indicate there will be some sort of football action, but the offensive vs. defensive scrimmage format from last year may also be tossed aside.
"It's more of, I believe we're calling it a spring festival type of deal," Rodriguez said. "We're trying to make it an event, for fans to come out and be kind of fan-friendly. I think they want to see some football too, so we'll have some competitive stuff. We may do things a little bit different, do some 1-on-1s and do some different things that fans may want to watch."
"And the scrimmage part of it, I've never been that that's the end all to be all, and if you had a great spring scrimmage thjat means you're destined for greatness or something like that, or the opposite being true. So we'll come up with that will be some football stuff, but also some other stuff that's family friendly that people want to have."
