For the second consecutive season, the WVU football faced quite the significant roster re-build. And for the most part, the Mountaineers wrapped up their roster construction for the coming season before spring ball got underway. But they are still adding pieces to the puzzle at this late hour, with camp fall camp set to begin in less than a week.
Before WVU gets back to action, head coach Rich Rodriguez made a late addition to the roster. It was reported this week that a new face has popped up on the roster in linebacker Destin Achi, who previously played for the Southwest Community College.
"From the first time I visited, I felt welcomed by the coaching staff and the players, and I could tell they genuinely believed in my potential," Achi told West Virginia On SI. "WVU has always been on my radar, and as I got to know the coaches and learned more about the program, it just felt like the right fit. I really liked the culture, the opportunity to develop, and felt like it was the best place for me."
Destin Achi continues JUCO pipeline for West Virginia
The Mountaineers went in heavily on JUCO-level players when recruiting this past year, bringing in double-digit numbers. Many are reportedly being paid like regular Division 1 transfer portal players, and are expected to be make an immediate impact on the defensive side of the ball.
Achi is both young, having four years of eligibility remaining, and a late addition. So it's not necessarily expected he'll play a big role this year. But he does slot in nicely to replace departing linebacker Trey McGlothlin, disappeared from the roster earlier this week ahead of his freshman season.
He also reportedly has a connection to West Virginia's Tobi Haastrup, and such existing ties to current players are always encouraging to see as players ehe program.
