While it doesn't neccessarily affect how the team plays on the field, one of the most enjoyable aspects of college football pagentry is the pre-game entrance, as the home team takes the field in front of tens of thousands of passionate fans. And the West Virginia Mountaineers will be tweaking their entrance this season.
During his first stint at West Virginia during the 2000's, Rich Rodriguez became known for having his team enter through an inflatable WVU helmet, which became a part of the pre-game festivities celebrated by the fan base. However, some fans were disappointed when that didn't return last season, with Rodriguez continuing the newer tradition of the team entering the field via the weight room.
And on Monday eveningduring his appearanceon the year's first edition of The Rich Rodriguez Show, the head coach of the Mountaineers was asked about whether or not the inflatable helmet might return. And while he surely disappointed many fans by delivering the news that it won't, he did share that he will be switching up the team's run-out to add a bit more flare to the festivites.
West Virginia Mountaineers to begin tunnel run-out during pre-game entrances
Rodriguez announced that this year, the Mountaineerswill be switchingto running out to the field via the home tunnel where the band traditionally also takes the field, bringing the action a little closer to the home stands. he compared it to a gladiator's entrance when discussing why he likes the change.
He also noted that there will also be a "tunnel cam" that broadcsts the walk from the locker room down through the tunnel on the scoreboard, allowing fans an extra peak inside the atmosphere as the Mountaineers make their way to the field.
