WVU women's basketball Big 12 schedule highlighted by favorable home lineup

As the Big 12 released the 2024-25 women’s basketball schedule matrix on Wednesday, one thing likely jumped out at many fans of the West Virginia women’s basketball program -- the Mountaineers were lucky enough to draw home matchups with what will likely be many of its toughest opponents.
With the top two finishers in the conference standings last season -- Oklahoma and Texas -- leaving for the SEC, new programs will rise to the top of the league this winter. WVU finished sixth in the conference standings last year, with only Baylor, Iowa State, and Kansas State amongst returning teams that finished conference play better than WVU. All three programs also finished the season in the AP Top 25, along with WVU. The Mountaineers will face each team only once, and will get both the Cyclones and Wildcats at the WVU Coliseum. In addition, of the six returning Big 12 programs WVU will have to face on the road, five finished in the bottom half of the conference standings last season.
Two teams who will join the league for the first time -- Colorado and Utah -- finished in the final AP Top 25 poll last season. WVU’s only battle with Utah this season will also come at home, while Colorado is one of three teams in the Big 12 the Mountaineers will face twice in the regular season -- once at home and once on the road. The Mountaineers also get a second consecutive home-and-away season series with Cincinnati, a former prominent Big East rival who returned to the conference last year.
