West Virginia women's soccer alumni Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence helped Canada keep their hopes alive to defend their 2020 Olympic gold medal on Sunday.

Canada met host nation France in the second of three schedule group stage matchups for Canada. While a scandal surrounds the Canadian organization regarding spying on an opponents' practice with a drone, they didn't let it distract them too much as they rallied themselves to a 2-1 victory over France. Buchanan and Lawrence both logged a full 90 minutes of play during the matchup.

Canada's next game comes on Wednesday, when they will battle Columbia. The squad has been docked six points for the cheating scandal, so they will need to notch another win on Wednesday to keep their chance at advancing past group play a reality. Even then, they may not qualify to continue in the tournament.
