West Virginia men's soccer ranked No. 1 in nation

West Virginia men's soccer made program history on Tuesday as they earned their first-ever No. 1 national ranking.
The Mountaineers find themselves at the top of both the United Soccer Coaches Poll and the Top Drawer Soccer. The ranking eclipses the program's previous best, when they sat at No. 2 in the United Soccer poll on two separate occasions in 2023.
WVU found themselves ranked fourth last week, sitting behind Clemson, Marshall and Pittsburgh, respectively. However, in a week of upsets, Clemson's only match of the week ended in a draw with in-state rival South Carolina, while Marshall was upset by Xavier and Pitt was knocked off by Penn.
In addition, midfielder Simon Carlson was named the Sun Belt Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after recording three goals and two assists over the course of two games this past week. He now sits tied for first nationally in assists with four. It is the second week in a row a WVU player has earned the honor.
The Mountaineers are undefeated on the season, gaining their second and third wins to open the year in consecutive 4-0 shutouts of Saint Francis (PA) and George Washington. The Mountaineers have outscored opponents 12-2 so far this season, with forward Sergio Ors Navarro currently tied for second nationally in goals score with six total.
