WVU football has gained a commitment from yet another underrated in-state prospect who has flown under the Power 5 radar.

Mykel Davis of Wheeling Park, who is currently unrrated by major recruiting services, announced on Twitter/X on Tuesday that he has accepted a preferred walk-on offer with the Mountaineers. Davis tallied 800-plus receiving yards and 11 touchdowns during the 2023 campaign, both good for top-15 marks statewide.

"Thank you to the staff of West Virginia University for believing in me and giving me this great opportunity," Davis said on Twitter.

Davis was previously mentioned this week by HailWV as one of a number of underrated talents with preferred walk-on offers that may join the 2024 class late.

In an interview with WTOV before the start of the 2023 season, Wheeling Park head coach Chris Daugherty offered some praise for the set of intangibles that Davis brings to the gridiron.

"He's got some talent, he's got some size, and he's got good hands. I think he is gonna put it all together," Daughterty said.

But perhaps where Davis may shine the most in his ability to develop into a hidden gem at wide receiver under a Division 1 program. During Daugherty's interview, he highlighted the commitment Davis showed in the weight room and in off-season workouts.

He also noted the role track and field played in continuing to develop Davis as an athlete. Davis competed in the high jump, finishing seventh at the Class AAA meet with a jump of 6'2, and also managing a PR of 6'7 at the Brooke Relays.

"I think what’s really going to show is his off-season," Daugherty said. "This off-season he really bought into the weight room, for the first time ever he ran track. He showed talent there, you know, to jump 6’7 and have never been on a high jump pit ever."
